SACRAMENTO, CA, UNITED STATES , April 30, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Torch Club, Sacramento’s premier blues club, will host a series of fundraising events during a 3-day virtual party kicking off with a live music concert on Friday, May 1st, followed by a fashion fundraiser on Saturday, May 2nd, and ending with a Toast the Torch DIY cocktail party on Sunday, May 3rd. All of the live-streamed events will take place on Facebook Live.

Dubbed “SIP” (Support in Place), a group of local Sacramento women-owned businesses created the series of events to support the woman-owned business that closed more than a month ago due to the coronavirus pandemic in order to protect their patrons and employees.
Because of the indefinite closure, The Torch Club’s staff have been put in a precarious position of technically still having a job, but without the income necessary to pay for basic things like rent, food, and bills. The virtual events were designed to allow customers to continue to connect with their favorite club, inviting them to “support in place” through a series of fun online fundraisers.

“Since we can’t be face-to-face with our customers in-person and provide live music 6 nights a week as we normally would, we are going to use Facebook to stream live events and connect virtually with our patrons,” said Marina Texeira, owner of The Torch Club.

The Torch Club, a Sacramento institution, would have held its 85th-anniversary celebration this month.

"There's not a lot of businesses left in Sacramento that can say they've been here for 85 years," Texeria continued. "With so many businesses struggling, I’m honored that people in our community are banding together to help The Torch Club survive. I’m proud to have the opportunity to try to continue running the business, albeit virtually."

As one of Sacramento's oldest bars, The Torch Club is home to the best in local and national blues acts with live music six days a week. When it first opened, The Torch Club was located on 6th and J streets and was quite the watering hole for politicians. The business opened in 1934, run by Johnny “Bananas” Oreb and Ernie Maskovich, and it was one of the first local businesses, along with Old Ironsides, to receive a liquor license after Prohibition. In the '80s, the club became known as one of the best spots in the area for live blues music. The Torch Club is now located at 15th and I streets. In your experience, what are the 5 things each of us can do to help solve the Loneliness Epidemic? Please give a story or an example for each.

Loneliness is not an epidemic that has to affect our lives. In fact, I believe there are five things that each one of us can do to go through this process and really kick loneliness out of our lives.

1. Being known by God is the first thing. You may not agree with this premise, but you are here reading an article from a pastor. The first way to deter loneliness in our lives is to be known and loved by God. And here is the greatest thing about this first step: it’s not actually a step we have to take or make happen. The truth is, it’s already happened. God knows each and every one of us and He loves us unconditionally. Truly all we need to do is acknowledge and accept this love. Maybe you have never had a conversation with God, maybe you do not know where to start. But can I encourage you to start with a simple sentence? Just say “God can you let me know you know me? “Can you let me know you love me?” It’s a simple prayer but I truly believe in a God that hears you. I believe if you pray that prayer with faith in your heart, He is going to do things in your life, so you are known and loved by God.

2. Simply be your authentic self. I’ve got to be honest, as a​ ​woman​ in my forties​, I realize this is a lifetime journey. It changes with seasons and some seasons are easier. Some seasons it takes a little more effort, but if I don’t want to live a life of loneliness, I have to be the person I am uniquely designed to be. I can’t try to be a cheap imitation of somebody else. I know it’s​​ cliché, but only I can be the very best me there is. Brace yourself for a total mom brag. We have three kids, two boys who are 15 and 13, and our baby girl is 11. Just this past year our baby girl, Grace, moved to a brand-new school as a fifth-grader which is the oldest grade in her elementary school. Recently we had our parent-teacher conference at this new school with her new teacher and I received the greatest mom compliment I’ve ever received. Her teacher said, “you know Grace, she really knows who she is.” When she said that I thought, I want to know that for me personally for my whole life. I not only want to protect that in my daughter but also in me. We would like to explore and flesh out the trait of resilience. How would you define resilience? What do you believe are the characteristics or traits of resilient people?

Resilience is when you make the decision that you will achieve your goal no matter what battles lie ahead, and you will continue to get up no matter how many times you are knocked down.

Resilient people…

…do not give up. You most likely have heard the Japanese proverb, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.” No matter how many times you knock down a resilient person, they are always going to get back up.
…are always focused on their ultimate purpose — their “why”, which is often much larger than themselves. They know that if they give up, they are not only letting themselves down, they are letting many others down, as well.
… internalize their pain and reframe it into passion. We all have problems; we all have dark days. What matters is how we respond to these challenges.
…have desire. Simply stated, they want it more. They want it so bad that they are constantly focused on the end goal, and they put in the action to continue pursuing their objectives no matter what obstacles arise.
…are positive and always look at a situation in the following terms: ’What can this failure help me learn?’ or ‘What lesson can it teach me?’ rather than, ‘Why is this happening to me?’

When you think of resilience, which person comes to mind? Can you explain why you chose that person?

Inky Johnson comes to mind right away.

This is a man who worked ridiculously hard while growing up to earn a college football scholarship, and in his last season before he most likely would have been a highly sought-after NFL draft pick, he suffered a career ending injury that paralyzed his right arm. He could have sat there and felt sorry for himself, but did he? No. He kept his chin up and is now one of the best-known motivational speakers out there. He had his entire life’s pursuit derailed, and instead of allowing this injury to get him down, he leveraged it and used his situation to his advantage.

I remember listening to motivational talks of his before some of my football practices or before workouts while I was a student at Iowa Central Community College before my transfer to the University of Iowa, and his talks gave me the encouragement I needed to keep pushing on even when I didn’t want to. If he could take such a devastating situation and turn it into a positive, I decided that I had absolutely no reason not to give it my all each day.

Having a vision and being excited about something is not enough. Typically people build a solution, looking for a problem to solve. But the best way to understand if you’re going to have something that’s successful is to go find a problem — one that people might not know they have — and then go build it. And if you believe in something, make sure you test it, and make sure it’s solving something.

Know there’s a product-market fit and a founder fit. Make sure you fit what you’re doing. It should be something that fits you and your personality.
Go as far as you can without having to raise money. When you have an idea for a company, you want to go as far as you can without raising money because you want to focus maniacally on customers. It’s hard to do because you have to survive and buy food and pay your rent. But the minute you take a nickel from an investor, you now have a new customer that you are beholden to. As the founder, one of your chief customers is your investor; you have to communicate with them constantly. You have to give them the good news and the bad news — they need to hear it all. Be prepared to understand that an investor is your customer as well.

It’s human nature to be negative. Prove them wrong, but never gloat. When I sent that investor the box of Outdoorsy goodies, I also thanked him for making us be more focused and making me think harder and work harder on the business concept. Basically, you never want to be an arrogant winner — it’s very unbecoming. Even if you’re right, be a very gracious winner.

Don’t be a good loser though. My dad always said, “Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser.” Losing should never be something you’re really good at. We’re all going to lose in business, but what that means is you when you lose, you want it to hurt. You want to learn something from the loss. Based on your experience, can you share 5 strategies that people can use to harness the sense of tenacity and do what naysayers think is impossible? (Please share a story or an example for each)

Don’t take “no” as final — it’s just the first step — Just because someone, even someone in power, tells you “no” doesn’t mean you can’t try anyway. My best example of this turned out to be starting a new industry in clean energy.
Try a different approach — If the first attempt doesn’t work, don’t just give up; think of a different way to accomplish the goal and try again.

Rely on your support system — Sometimes the challenges wear you down and you need to be reinvigorated or re-inspired to keep pushing. My fiancée Kirby does this for me. She shares my passion for conservation and leaving the world a better place, so when I get overwhelmed by obstacles or with running a business, she reminds me why I’m in this fight.
Be appreciative and reflect — Go back through your own story and look at what you’ve already accomplished. If you take some time to reflect on how far you’ve come, it will usually give you the confidence to drive forward yet again… As this relates to my story, even though Colorado was the first state to pass community solar legislation a decade ago, over the past several years I watched other states leap ahead with more progressive laws while Colorado’s primary utility fought the expansion of community solar. There were times when I thought it would simply be easier to concentrate on other states and leave Colorado. But I reflected on where we started at the very birth of the industry, and I refused to give up on Colorado as our home market. In 2019, Governor Polis signed the Community Solar Garden Modernization Act and the Public Utilities Commission set out new rules. Now Colorado is within a few months of leading the pack in community solar once again!

Don’t get mad; get working — Turn frustration into focus to keep driving forward. A big part of doing the impossible is just not giving up. Before I started SunShare, it was illegal for anyone but the regulated monopoly utility to sell energy across property lines. The regulatory attorneys with whom I spoke told me it was never going to happen when I said I was going to get that law changed. And I admit, my first response was frustration. Don’t compare yourself to others — the minute you start comparing yourself you lose sense of your true self. Every person’s path is unique. Embrace it and enjoy the experience.

Talk to yourself in a positive manner throughout the day. It’s easy to find yourself in a cycle of self-doubt, which inhibits learning and operating outside your comfort zone. Every morning literally tell yourself you are a badass that will win. And if you fail, remember it’s only temporary. Winston Churchill has this amazing quote on failure which is “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

Train every day to be prepared for when you need to be resilient. If you don’t mentally rehearse for adversity, it will paralyze you. Make the necessary investments to handle those stressful times. As I’ve taken on more responsibility and Row House continues to grow quickly, I’ve prioritized my sleep, diet (my wife proudly converted me to plant-based), and fitness routine. By investing in my mind, spirit, and body, I’m more balanced when dealing with the impossible.
Find a coach and commit to the process. This one is tough because change is not an overnight process. Coaching requires time, repetition, and some tough times as you go outside your comfort zone.

Enjoy the journey. Remember to appreciate the fact that you get to grow, that you get to make choices, and that you get to decide who you want to be. Remember that NO matter what, NO one can tell you what to feel or do. The greatest gift we have is free will so own it every day.
