— Joey Orduna Hastings

RENO, NEVADA, UNITED STATES, November 30, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — (Reno, Nev.) – The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) has announced Connie Hickman Tanner as Chief Program Officer, Child Welfare and Juvenile Law. She starts January 1, 2018.

Hickman Tanner has more than 26 years of experience working with courts. She began her legal career with the Federal District Court, Office of Desegregation Monitoring, working with a team to monitor compliance of the Pulaski County Desegregation Settlement Agreement.

She then joined the Arkansas Supreme Court Administrative Office of the Courts, where she worked for 23 years, first as a staff attorney, then as director of juvenile court services and court services director. She supervised the Judicial Education Division that provided ongoing continuing legal education for all appellate, circuit and district judges, their employees and court stakeholders, Public Education and Community Outreach, and the Domestic Violence Programs. She also supervised all Juvenile Court Programs, including the Court Improvement Program (CIP) State Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) Program, Dependency-Neglect Attorney Ad Litem Program, and Parent Counsel Program.

As part of Arkansas’ CIP, Hickman Tanner coordinated the first assessment of how Arkansas courts were handling dependency-neglect proceedings. In 2005, she coordinated the reassessment and co-authored the CIP Reassessment Report and authored the CIP Reassessment Executive Summary. This reassessment evaluated implementation of the committee’s 1997 recommendations, and included additional findings and recommended improvements, which were key to Arkansas making significant systemic changes to the courts in child welfare.

"Connie brings a plethora of experience to the NCJFCJ," said Joey Orduna Hastings, NCJFCJ chief executive officer. “Her invaluable contributions that led to systematic change as part of Arkansas’ Supreme Court and Court Improvement Program speaks to her breadth of work and innovative leadership that can take the NCJFCJ into our next 80 years. We are thrilled to add her as a thought leader to our team, whose work is recognized by many in the field as best practices.”

In 2013, she researched and wrote Educational Stability: Improving Outcomes for Foster Children and Youth, as part of her Fellows project with the National Center for State Courts. This work led to the development of strategic plans with specific recommended practice strategies for judges, attorneys, CASAs, and child welfare caseworkers to improve educational outcomes for foster youth.

“We look forward to Connie’s leadership guiding the NCJFCJ’s work in child welfare and juvenile law,” said Judge Anthony (Tony) Capizzi, NCJFCJ president. “Her vast experience and history in all the layers of our juvenile and family court system will be essential for the NCJFCJ, as we continuously adapt to new trends and challenges emerging every day within our nation’s courts.”

Hickman Tanner is a NCSC Fellow, and has served as faculty with the American Bar Association, the NCJFCJ, and National Association of Counsel for Children. She researched and wrote the Arkansas Juvenile Judges’ Benchbook. She also authored a law review article entitled, Arkansas’s Extended Jurisdiction Act: The Balance of Offender Rehabilitation and Accountability. Hickman Tanner is a graduate of University of Arkansas at Little Rock, School of Law and has an undergraduate degree from Hendrix College.

“I am honored and excited to join the NCJFCJ team,” said Hickman Tanner. “As a court administrator, I have relied on the NCJFCJ for resources, research, and best practices to enhance my work with judges, attorneys, court staff, and stakeholders. I look forward to working with fellow NCJFCJ staff, board, membership, and our national partners to address issues facing our courts so that we can better serve children, youth, and families.”

Basketball legend and author Kareem Abdul-Jabbar talks to Rather in Los Angeles.

TV host, podcaster and comic Larry Wilmore interviews Rather in Riverside.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Larry Wilmore to Serve as Interviewers

I find myself thinking deeply about what it means to love America, as I surely do.”

— Dan Rather

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, November 30, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — Veteran TV journalist Dan Rather comes to Live Talks Los Angeles for two separate appearances in downtown Los Angeles and Riverside to discuss his new book "What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism." Rather appears on Monday, December 4, 2017, 8:00pm at The Novo at L.A. Live in conversation with basketball legend, bestselling author and culture critic Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Speaking with Rather at the Fox Riverside Theatre the next day, Tuesday, December 5, 2017, 8:00pm, is talk show host, comedian and podcaster Larry Wilmore. Tickets and more details can be found at livetalksla.org.

The Los Angeles event marks Abdul-Jabbar's third appearance with Live Talks Los Angeles, and his first as an interviewer. Previously he discussed books he authored, "Coach Wooden and Me" and "Writings on the Wall." The talk between Rather and Wilmore is Live Talks Los Angeles' second foray into Riverside, after actor Bryan Cranston's appearance in September inaugurated Live Talks at the Fox. Emmy Award winner Wilmore is perhaps best known as the host of Comedy Central's "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore" after serving as the "Senior Black Correspondent" on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." Currently, he hosts "Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air" on The Ringer Podcast Network, which Time recently named as one of the Top 10 Podcasts of 2017. Off-screen, Wilmore serves as co-creator and consulting producer on HBO's "Insecure." He also helped to launch ABC’s "Black-ish" as an executive producer.

"What Unites Us," a book of essays co-written with Elliot Kirschner, was published earlier this month. "I find myself thinking deeply about what it means to love America, as I surely do," writes the iconic newsman on why he took on this project. At a moment of crisis over our national identity, Dan Rather has been reflecting—and writing passionately almost every day on social media—about the world we live in, what our core ideals have been and should be, and what it means to be an American. Now, in a collection of wholly original essays, the venerated television journalist celebrates our shared values and reminds us about what matters most in our great country.

With a famed and storied career that has spanned more than six decades, Dan Rather has earned his place as one of the world's best-known journalists. He has interviewed every president since Eisenhower and, over that time, personally covered almost every important dateline in the United States and around the world. Rather joined CBS News in 1962. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1981 he assumed the position of anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News—a post he held for 24 years. His reporting across the network helped turn "60 Minutes" into an institution, launched "48 Hours" as an innovative newsmagazine program, and shaped countless specials and documentaries. Upon leaving CBS, Rather returned to the in-depth reporting he always loved, creating the Emmy Award–winning Dan Rather Reports on HDNet. Now, building upon that foundation, he is president and CEO of News and Guts, an independent production company he founded that specializes in high-quality nonfiction content across a range of traditional and digital distribution channels.

Event Details: Tickets can be purchased at Live Talks Los Angeles. Price ranges from $40-$76 and all tickets include a copy of "What Unites Us." The Novo is located at 800 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90015. Fox Performing Arts Center is at 3801 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside, CA 92501.

About Live Talks Los Angeles: Since 2010 Live Talks Los Angeles has presented over 250 talks featuring authors, actors, filmmakers, artists, musicians, comedians, chefs, scientists, and business thought leaders in various venues in Los Angeles. Jared Hadaway Hopes To Coordinate With City About Scavenger Hunt

Jared Hadaway 5

Jared Hadaway 5

SANTA MONICA, CA, UNITED STATES, November 30, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — The camaraderie and competition of an old-fashioned scavenger hunt are what Jared Hadaway loves about the activity. While Hadaway has participated in many scavenger hunts in his lifetime, he hopes to plan one for his city.

"The idea is still early in planning, but I hope to approach the city with their unique scavenger hunt," says Hadaway. "They are fun, competitive, and great for team building."

Hadaway has always wondered why more communities and groups don't have these kinds of hunts. He knows companies across the country have their own for team-building exercises, but not cities.

"It's a terrific way for neighbors to meet and socialize, all while earning great prizes and having fun," adds Hadaway. "Why not bring the community together and have a blast? It's a win-win situation."

Scavenger hunts have been a staple for children and at birthday parties. Kids have a great team exploring and finding prizes. But that doesn't mean adults can't have the same fun throughout the city.

Hadaway is adamant about the benefits of organizing an event like a hunt. Plus, adults have a whole city to explore, not just a house like children do.

"Organizing a scavenger hunt with adults involved opens up endless possibilities," explains Hadaway. "The whole city can be utilized for the hunt, which makes it exciting."

Hadaway has mentioned his idea to friends and family, and they echo his excitement. Some have already volunteered to sign up right now for the hunt, and also offer assistance.

Combing The History Of The City With A Fun Event

What makes the scavenger hunt unique for adults is that companies around the city can donate locations and items. Hadaway has already started a list of companies to approach.

"Picture a scavenger hunt all over the city," says Hadaway. "Teams competing against each other. Companies and businesses are offering locations for clues and finds already. It would be a huge event and hopefully starting a trend for other cities."

First, Hadaway will need to pick a theme for the scavenger hunt. While people and businesses are already getting a head start on being involved, these have to relevant to the idea.

The hunt could be an every year event that happens in the city. What Hadaway wants to do is make each hunt different from the previous years. He's leaning towards recognizing the city's heritage and history for the first scavenger hunt.

"This community has a rich history and landmarks that not many people know about," explains Hadaway. "Also, the first event could pay homage to those landmarks.

With the winter months approaching, the scavenger hunt won't take place until at least the spring. This planning period gives Hadaway time to pitch the idea to the city and compile a list of vendors.

"Being prepared is key before I go to the city and make my official presentation," Hadaway adds. "I want this event to happen, so having all the bases covered is important."

Another Hunt Geared Towards Children In The Works

The adults won't be the only ones able to have fun. Hadaway also hopes to incorporate a city-wide children's scavenger hunt. With the help from parents, children could travel around the city in kid-themed businesses and landmarks.

"Children could benefit learning more about this beautiful and history-rich city," Hadaway proudly states. "Of course, adults would need to help, but the prizes and clues geared towards children."

There are parades throughout the year celebrating different holidays. Those events happen every year. Hadaway hopes to begin a yearly tradition with the scavenger hunt. Look for the idea to be pitched to the city late next year.

"If this happens, I would be grateful and proud to head the scavenger hunt," Hadaway concludes.

Chadd Sullo From Stratford, Connecticut Is Planning To Coordinate Book Swap To Raise Money For Good Cause

Chadd Sullo 3

Chadd Sullo 2

Chadd Sullo 1

Chadd Sullo 1

STRATFORD, CONNECTICUT , UNITED STATES, November 30, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ — If you have never been to a  book swap, it's a pretty simple concept. Everybody attending brings books they want to get rid of, they mingle and enjoy food and refreshments, and pick out books to buy. The money then goes to a local charity in the form of a donation. Chadd Sullo has been planning a book swap for his community, hoping to finalize a date soon.

After pondering a way to help the local children's section of the library, he realized why not incorporate the lifeblood of the building. That's books.

Residents all over the city have books they have read and are no use for them anymore. Sullo is planning on letting people set up a table for the books and sell them for reasonable prices. This event would help make the kids section at the library exceptional.

Sullo explains there could be other ways to run the book swap and get the most funds for the charity. The event could let patrons buy tickets that would then could towards purchasing books.

Older or less than good condition books would go for fewer tickets. The more recent and popular books would sell for more tickets. The more books a person wants to buy, the more tickets sold. More tickets sold means more funds for the cause.

While discussing this potential idea with other people, Sullo has become overwhelmed with support. He has been surprised with the amount of support that he has received.

Some residents have said they will donate money without even buying books. They believe the children's section of the library needs to be updated.

Ideas passed around to help the section would be purchasing computers. Currently, there is the only one computer available for use in the library. Adults and children use this desktop and always has a waitlist.

"Having multiple computers just for children would be beneficial for the library," Sullo says. "Not only would these computers be used to look up books in the library, but could have educational programs to play."

The library has done all it can over the years to update the building and different sections. But with minimum funds available, it has become a difficult task.

"The library, financially, is tapped out," explains Sullo. "I feel so sad for the administrators because they want to improve the children's section."

Another idea when it comes to using the funds raised from the book swap would be more books and games.

"Kids come to the library with parents and just wait around for nothing to do," says Sullo. "The money raised could buy games and activities for the kids."

The goal is to make the section engaging for children. With computers and games, these would occupy the children for hours.

If any leftover money is available, Sullo hopes to help build an outdoor gazebo in front of the library. In the summer, patrons could read and meet at the gazebo. Libraries in the surrounding communities have a gazebo, so this would be a trend the library would like to add.

"This book swap would be all about improving the library overall," states Sullo. "I love coming here and finding new books to read. I want that tradition to continue for years to come. That means updating the building and services to make sure that happens."

Finally, Sullo plans on coordinating the book swap with library officials in the next few weeks to set a date. After that, residents can start gathering books they want to sell or donate.

Expectations are high and the library cannot wait for the results.
